Raman-confocal microscope

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

The apparatus combines confocal microscopy and Raman spectroscopy to provide high resolution spectra, mapping the surface of the sample with two wavelengths and several optical magnifications.

Ablation targets

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

Ablation targets are prepared by carefully mixing metal or bimetal catalyst powders with a graphite cement. The mixture is placed in a teflon mold and submitted to a temperature treatment.

The ablation products

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

The ablation products are collected from the cold finger. SWCNTs form a web with the catalyst nanoparticles and amorphous carbon which peals off the collector.

Laser ablation

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

Laser ablation. The high energy of the 25ns laser pulse is focused on the graphite target in a 20mm2 spot. The plasma formed contains the necessary atomic and ionic species to form SWCNTs.

Water cooled copper collector

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

Water cooled copper collector. The “cold finger” is placed inside the quartz tube downstream of the target in order to colect the ablation products. The high length ensures a high surface and temperature gradient for the products to condense.

Laser ablation chamber

27 September 201329 October 2013 administrator

Laser ablation chamber custom designed for synthesis of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The quartz tube is placed inside an electrical oven which can maintain a constant temperature up to 1200oC. The pressure inside the chamber can be controlled between 10-2 Torr to atmospheric pressure.
